When we moved to Texas, we drove through a cute city called Fredericksburg and planned on visiting there. Finally, we made it there a couple of weeks ago. Our first stop was to Wildseed Farms.
Then we made our way to Fredericksburg. We parked next to the old Gillespie County Court House and found a very unexpected sign on the side of the building.
I don't think I've ever seen a fallout shelter sign before. We wandered up and down Main Street. Since it was Memorial Day, many of the stores were closed but we still had fun.
Fredericksburg was originally settled by German immigrants and after all these years they still have a lot of German influence.
I found a Brugge flag waving!!! |
Jonathan and I usually stumble upon way cooler things that we weren't expecting when we go on trips. As we were walking along we noticed a couple of markers in front of this plain looking home.
It turned out that Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Texas. We did not expect this at all.
Jonathan was so excited and we are definitely coming back and visiting the Admiral Nimitz Museum.
We found some great hats at a store.
We had dinner at the Auslander (it means foreigner in German) and we both got schnitzel, but instead of the traditional one that I had in Delft I got the Texas Schnitzel. It was weird, but delicious! It had ranchero sauce, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole.
We finished our evening in Fredericksburg with a walk around the Marktplatz (I told you they still have a lot of their Germanic roots).
This building is now the Vereins Kirche Museum, but it used to be a church building that was used by the various religious groups for their services. It was torn down and then it was rebuilt to remember those that founded the city.
While we only saw a fraction of Fredericksburg, we fell in love and can't wait to go back again!
